Zach van Luling for Rocky Hill Town Council

Hi neighbors. In case we haven’t met, I am running for Town Council here in Rocky Hill. I am asking for your support.

My wife and I chose this town because we wanted to raise our daughter in a community that feels steady, safe, and proud of itself. We are putting down roots here for life. I take seriously the responsibility that comes with that.

You have not seen me posting a lot on Facebook during this race, but you may have seen me walking along a road here in town. I have been knocking doors in Rocky Hill almost every single day since June. That is several thousand doors in every neighborhood in town. I have spent hours on porches and in driveways talking with parents, seniors, lifelong residents, and brand new arrivals. I believe that if you want to represent people, the first thing you owe them is the respect to show up and listen.

Here is what I am hearing. Parents are worried about class sizes and support in the schools. Seniors are worried about rising costs and what happens if taxes keep climbing. Families are worried about basic safety on their own streets, because people are blowing stop signs, speeding through neighborhoods, and driving distracted. A lot of people are frustrated that they cannot get a clear answer about simple things like paving, sidewalks, or when town upkeep is actually going to happen.

That is why I am running.

For a long time, Rocky Hill had a reputation we could be proud of. This town was known for keeping the mill rate competitive and still delivering strong services. Lately it feels like the standard has slipped. Services have been cut repeatedly. Support in the schools has been stretched. Class sizes are going up again. Yet, we are still paying more, year after year. The mill rate went up again this year, even after painfully deep cuts. I do not think that should be considered acceptable.

I believe Rocky Hill deserves better growth, better schools, and better leadership.

Better growth means development that fits our town and strengthens our tax base instead of leaving homeowners to absorb the cost later. We should be filling empty commercial space, chasing leads and recruiting the right employers, and putting real performance requirements and clawbacks into any deal made on behalf of the public.

Better schools means stability in the classroom. I am the product of strong special education, and I know what consistent support can do for a child. Parents and teachers deserve honesty about how dollars reach students. That stability today is what our town looks like five years from now.

Better leadership means treating every tax dollar like it came out of somebody’s grocery money, and being honest about priorities before decisions get locked in. It means long-term planning that is transparent, accountable, and reliable. For years we have heard about our ‘master’ sidewalk and paving plans, without any meaningful effort to effectively communicate the details to residents. That changes with a Democratic majority led by Allan Smith.

Better leadership also means opening the doors of government. For too long, residents have had to go searching for answers that should already be public. Under Allan Smith, with a Democratic majority, our goal is to bring town business back into the open. We would work side by side with our state delegation to bring more state dollars home to Rocky Hill, and we would do it in daylight so everyone can see what is being asked for and what is being delivered.

Here is what I am offering you. I will listen. I will work relentlessly. I will tell you the truth about what is happening. I will measure results in public, not behind closed doors.

If you believe in better growth, better schools, better leadership, and open, accountable town government, I am asking for your vote for Town Council.
