Tom Cosker for Rocky Hill Board of Education

About Tom

I have lived in Rocky Hill since 2004 when my wife Colleen and I got married. We raised two children here, and they both attended and graduated/will soon graduate from Rocky Hill public schools. I have been involved in the Rocky Hill community in many ways over the years, from cub scout leader to baseball coach, and have forged many relationships with the people of this town which I value highly. I formed an advocacy/support group for parents of students with disabilities in Rocky Hill and successfully pushed for the creation of and chaired the Special Education Advisory Council to the BOE. I was appointed by the Town Council to the Commission on Inclusion and Innovation, and have been serving as the chair for 5 years, organizing various community events and working to ensure that all Rocky Hill residents feel welcome and have a voice. In 2023, I was elected to serve on the Board of Education and have learned a great deal in my first term.

Professionally, after a 13-year career as an engineer, I taught high school math and physics at a magnet school in East Hartford for 8 years.  For the past 6 years I have worked as a disability advocate at Disability Rights CT, a non-profit protection and advocacy organization. Over the years I have been a member of many statewide councils and commissions on special education and other disability topics, and have advocated and testified on education and disability issues to the legislature. I continue to advocate for students and all members of our community here in Rocky Hill using my professional and life experiences.

Why are you running?

I feel I can make valuable contributions to the Board, the Rocky Hill School system and the students and families of Rocky Hill. My personal and professional experiences have led me to be a strong advocate for all students and issues that are important to students and families. I will push for appropriate funding to allow for the best education and services for the students of Rocky Hill and the best facilities for our students, teachers and staff. I will continue to listen to the people of our community. You can be sure your voices are heard by me. I value transparency and will continue to push for agenda topics and conversations important to the community, and that the decision-making process around these topics are made visible and accessible to the public. I look forward to continuing my service to the Rocky Hill community as a member of the Board of Education.
